A Sum Greater Than Its Parts: A Merger of Equals

Staff Report

In 2010, ATN Industrie merged with its parent company DCM USIMECA. The main purpose of this merger process was to cope with the actual market realities by adapting the structures of both companies

“With 55 years and 30 years experience respectively in the converting industry, DCM and ATN are proud to merge, so we can reinforce our technical knowledge, better serve our customers by fulfilling their requirements, giving the company an optimized configuration, by making out of two healthy companies one unique, stronger, more efficient company involved in improving customers relationship and service,” according to a statement released by DCM. Through this new configuration, synergies between ATN and DCM are improving thanks to its global reach within the converting industry, offering solutions such as printing machines for boards and flexible media, coaters, laminators for inner liners and slitters for packaging and cigarette paper.

One of the consequences of the merger has been a turnkey order for four printing lines (two ATENA rotogravure presses for cigarette hinge lid and outers and two DC-BORA rotogravure presses for paper soft packs) and one hotfoil stamping online unit for one of the major cigarette players in North Africa.
In the meantime the board converting segment has continued to innovate and develop its product range, strengthening its position in the cigarette packaging market.
“Lately, we have adapted our technology to market requirements by innovating and developing new equipment such as a flap breaker for checking the opening of the flaps after die cutting, a rejector unit for rejection of bad printed blanks, adaptations for UV dryer units for LCC varnish, a servo-driven rotary die cutter with four stations instead of three, allowing embossing and debossing, with servo drives and motors for each station for easier operation and even more accurate print-to-cut registering, as well as offline and online hotfoil stamping,” the company said.
ATN and DCM are combining their strengths as one unique company and will be attending important printing and tobacco packaging events such as Label Expo in Brussels, All-in-Print in Shanghai, DRUPA in Düsseldorf and other events all around the world.

Tobacco & Public Health: Time to Move On?

By: Chris Crawley It will surprise some in the public health community, but originally the tobacco industry never intended to harm its customers with a new product: manufactured cigarettes. Why would it? It didn’t occur to the fledgling cigarette business that smoking cigarettes may be harmful. On the contrary when cigarettes were first produced they were considered a great idea. They were smaller, much more convenient and easier to carry than cigars. The packaging was novel. What wasn’t to like? They entirely suited a modern world on the move.
