Graphic images fail expectations

Germany

A recent study of a group of 56 smokers and non-smokers indicated that putting graphic images on cigarette packs is entirely ineffective in preventing smokers from lighting up.
A team of researchers at the University of Bonn, headed by Dr. Rene Hurlemann, showed that the craving for a cigarette trumps any perceived dangers of tobacco smoking. The reason is because nicotine withdrawal tends to affect the fear center in the brain.

Niassa tobacco to be sold

Mozambique

The tobacco farmers in the province of Niassa in Mozambique have been experiencing severe problems selling their final product and their cause was taken up by the governor of the province, David Malizane.
The farmers, who complained to governor Malizane during his visit to the Mecanhelas district, said that the Mozambique Leaf Tobacco (MLT) company did not honor its commitment to buy the farmers’ crop despite the fact that the amount of tobacco produced had been grown based on consultations with MLT. The farmers insisted that MLT only buys a small percentage of their tobacco at very low prices, threatening their financial stability and livelihoods.

Tobacco excise tax hikes

Slovakia

In the latest example of a government attempting to mask the shortfalls of its own weak economic policies and poor fiscal planning, Slovakia’s finance minister Ivan Miklos stated that his government has taken a decision to raise the excise taxes in order to make up for financial losses resulting from the global financial crisis.
The new jump in tax rates is meant to prop up falling government revenues for the 2012 state budget. The move follows last month’s cut of Slovakia’s 2012 economic growth forecast by a full percentage point down to 3.4% (from the original estimate of 4.4%).

Clove ban unaffected

US

The World Trade Organization (WTO) has finally resolved the dispute between the United States and Indonesia. The organization issued a ruling on the Indonesian claim that outlawing cigarettes made of cloves – also known as kretek – is a discriminatory practice, since menthol cigarettes that use mint as one of their flavoring components, have not been banned in the US and that the ban is unnecessary.
The WTO ruling was mixed, as the panel of judges issued their statement. One part of the ruling said that “the ban is inconsistent with the national-treatment obligation because it accords clove cigarettes less favorable treatment than that accorded to menthol-flavored cigarettes.”

Menthol not riskier

US

For years, cigarettes with menthol were demonized as a product much more dangerous than regular cigarettes and the FDA has stated it intends to ban flavored cigarettes altogether. However, a new study by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) shed some light on the issue by analyzing data for nearly 86,000 people.
The study discovered that people who use cigarettes with menthol smoke fewer cigarettes per day than regular tobacco users. This prompted the NCI to arrive at a surprising conclusion: “The findings suggest that menthol cigarettes are no more, and perhaps less, harmful than non-menthol cigarettes.”

GHW debate heats up

US

US District Judge Richard Leon spend two hours recently questioning Justice Department lawyer Mark Stern about the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) intention to force tobacco companies to attach graphic health warnings (GHW) showing the effects of smoking to their cigarette packs. The new warning labels would take up the entire top half – front and back – of cigarette packs and also cover at least 20% of cigarette advertising.
The FDA has selected nine graphic images to communicate the idea that smoking might pose health risks, but Judge Leon questioned whether the images amounted to advocacy.

FDA report “flawed”

US

A recently issued report by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) containing an analysis of electronic cigarette contents in the Journal of Liquid Chromatography appears to be as biased as all of its previous efforts to regulate and even ban the sale of e-cigarettes.
In spite of growing evidence that the e cigarette might be the best smoking cessation aid, the FDA has spared no effort in trying to paint the gadget in a negative light, and the latest report, performed by the FDA’s own Division of Pharmaceutical Analysis, is no exception.

E-cigs grounded?

US
